Myofunctional Appliances

Removable devices that guide facial muscle function to correct developing jaw discrepancies.

Overview

Myofunctional Appliances

Myofunctional appliances utilize facial and masticatory muscle forces to produce changes in dental and skeletal relationships. These devices are primarily used during childhood development to guide proper jaw growth and correct developing malocclusions.

Commonly used appliances include Twin Block, Frankel, and Bionator for Class II cases (excessive upper jaw development), and various appliances for Class III cases (excessive lower jaw development). These devices work by redirecting or restricting jaw growth while stimulating proper development.

Early intervention with myofunctional appliances can often prevent the need for more extensive orthodontic treatment or orthognathic surgery later in life.
